TheSkeletalSystem:
Theskeletalsystemiscomposedof206bonesthatprovidesupportandshapetothehumanbody.Thesebonesaredividedintotwomaincategories:axialandappendicular.Theaxialskeletonincludestheskull,ribcage,andspinalcolumn,whiletheappendicularsystemincludesthelimbs,shoulder,andpelvicgirdles. Bonesaremadeupofcalciumandcollagenandarelivingtissuesthatundergoconstantremodelingthroughoutourlives.Theprocessofboneremodelingisregulatedbyabalancebetweenosteoblasts(whichbuildbone)andosteoclasts(whichbreakdownbone).Theskeletalsystemisnotjustastaticstructure,butalsoplaysanimportantroleincalciumhomeostasisandbloodcellproduction.TheMuscularSystem:
Themuscularsystemismadeupofover600musclesthatenablemovementandmaintainbodyposture.Musclesaredividedintothreecategories:smooth,cardiac,andskeletal.Smoothmusclesarefoundinthewallsofinternalorgansandareinvoluntary.Cardiacmuscleisfoundintheheartandisalsoinvoluntary.Skeletalmuscleisattachedtobonesandcontrolledbythesomaticnervoussystem. Musclesareformedfrombundlesoffibersthatarecapableofshorteningandcontracting.Theprocessbywhichamusclecontractsisinitiatedbyamessagefromthenervoussystem.Thismessagetriggersthereleaseofcalciumions,whichbindtoproteinsinthemusclefiberscausingthemtomovepasteachotherandgenerateforce.Thestrengthofthemuscleisdeterminedbythenumberandsizeofitsindividualfibers.TheNervousSystem:
Thenervoussystemisthecoordinatingsystemofthebodyandisresponsibleforreceivingandtransmittinginformation.Thesystemisdividedintotwomainparts:thecentralnervoussystem(CNS)andtheperipheralnervoussystem(PNS).TheCNSiscomposedofthebrainandspinalcord,whilethePNSincludesthenervesthatextendfromtheCNStotherestofthebody. Thenervoussystemcommunicatesinformationthroughspecializedcellscalledneurons.Thesecellshavethreebasicparts:thecellbody,dendrites,andanaxon.Whenaneuronisstimulatedbyanotherneuronorbyasensoryreceptor,anelectricalimpulseisgeneratedandtravelsdowntheaxon.Theimpulseisthentransmittedtoanotherneuronortoamusclecellviaasynapse.
