- Food Industry: Sodium acetate (as trihydrate) is used as a seasoning ingredient to impart a slightly sour taste to food products such as potato chips, popcorn, and cheese among others. It can also substitute vinegar as the former has a much longer shelf life compared to vinegar.
- Chemical Industry: Sodium acetate is also used in the chemical industry to produce various chemicals such as cellulose acetate, acetic anhydride, and acetic acid among others.
- Textile Industry: Sodium acetate is used in the textile industry to control the pH level and improve the dyeing process.
- Hot and Cold Energy: Sodium acetate has become popular for its heat and cold energy releasing properties. The trihydrate form of sodium acetate can be converted to anhydrous form under appropriate conditions. Later, when exposed to external conditions (water or pressure), it can convert back to the trihydrate form by releasing energy as heat or cold. Hence, it is useful as a reusable hand warmer or as a cooler for beverages.
