What is Trunking?

Trunking, in networking terms, refers to the process of merging multiple communication channels into a single link to improve network efficiency and speed. It is widely used in various networking environments, especially in local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs), to connect switches, routers, and servers within an organization. Trunking works by utilizing link aggregation techniques, through which multiple connections are merged into a single logical link, also known as a trunk. This logical link enables data transmission between devices at a higher speed and with improved redundancy. Trunking also helps to reduce network congestion and improves fault tolerance by distributing traffic across multiple links.

Why Use Trunking?

Using trunking has numerous benefits for organizations, including: 1. Faster data transfer speed: By combining multiple connections into a single logical link, trunking provides faster data transfer rates and greater bandwidth utilization. 2. Improved network efficiency: Trunking reduces network bottlenecks and allows for more efficient data transfer between devices connected to it. 3. Enhanced reliability: Trunking provides redundancy and fault tolerance, ensuring that data transmission is not disrupted in case of link failures. 4. Types of Trunking

Trunking is classified into two types: Port Trunking and VLAN Trunking. 1. Port Trunking – as the name suggests, Port Trunking combines multiple physical ports of a switch or router to create a logical link with increased bandwidth. The most common Port Trunking protocols include Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) and Port Aggregation Protocol (PAgP). LACP is an open standards-based protocol supported by a majority of networking vendors, while PAgP is a Cisco proprietary protocol. Using these protocols, switches can automatically configure and manage trunked links, distributing traffic across multiple physical ports and ensuring fault tolerance. 2. VLAN Trunking – VLAN Trunking enables the transmission of multiple VLANs (virtual local area networks) across a single physical link, allowing different VLANs to communicate with each other. VLAN Trunking is commonly used in large organizations with complex network infrastructures, where multiple departments require their own VLANs. The most common VLAN Trunking protocol is the IEEE 802.1Q protocol, which tags VLAN traffic with an identifier and sends it across a single physical link.
