The Fading Away of Extinction

The Decline of Biodiversity

Nowadays, the extinction rate is alarmingly high. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), one in four species of mammals, one in eight birds, one third of all amphibians, and 70% of the world’s assessed plants are in danger of extinction. The loss of biodiversity is a natural process, but the current rate of extinction is estimated to be 1000 times higher than the natural rate. The main drivers of this loss of biodiversity include habitat loss and degradation, climate change, overexploitation, pollution, and the introduction of exotic species.

The Impact of Human Activities

The rapid decline of biodiversity is mainly caused by human activities. Humans have altered over 75% of the Earth’s land surface, destroyed or degraded 85% of wetlands, overfished close to half of the world’s marine fisheries, and emitted huge amounts of greenhouse gases, which has caused climate change. In addition, human activities have also led to the introduction of invasive species, which has caused many extinctions and ecosystem disruptions. Our actions have not only caused the loss of many species, but also the loss of many ecosystem services that are essential to human survival.

The Urgent Need for Conservation

Conserving biodiversity is of paramount importance since it provides numerous ecosystem services, including pollination, water purification, and carbon sequestration, that are essential to human well-being. Moreover, biodiversity is valuable in and of itself since it is a source of wonder and inspiration. To conserve biodiversity, we need to act urgently to protect habitats, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, control invasives, and regulate hunting and fishing. We also need to educate and raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity and the need to conserve it among the public and policymakers. If we continue to ignore the plight of biodiversity and fail to take action, we may witness the extinction of many more species, including our own.
