Thebattlefieldwasset.Thearmieswereready.Thetensionintheairwaspalpable.Thetwocommanders,eachconfidentintheirownabilities,facedeachotheracrossthefield.Andthen,witharoarandarushofsound,thebattlebegan.
TheOpeningSalvo
Thefirstfewminutesofthebattlewerechaotic.Bothsideslaunchedaflurryofattacks,tryingtogainanearlyadvantage.Onesidetriedtooutflanktheother,whiletheotherattemptedafull-frontalassault.Theresultwasawild,confusingmeleewithbarelyanyroomtobreathe.
Butasthesmokecleared,itbecameapparentthatthefront-linefightersononesidewerebearingthebruntoftheenemy'sassault.Whiletheyvaliantlyheldtheirground,itwasclearthatwithoutreinforcements,theywouldbeoverrun.Thecommanderofthebeleagueredforcecalledforsupport,butitseemedthattheiralliesweretoofarawaytooffermuchhelpintime.
TheTurningPoint
Justwhenitseemedthatallwaslost,asmallgroupofcavalryarrivedonthescene.Theirswift,decisivestrikeskepttheenemyatbayjustlongenoughfortherestofthearmytoarrive.Bitbybit,theybegantopushtheenemyback.Thetideofbattlehadturned.
Thebattlewasstillintense,withthetwosideslockedinfiercecombat.Butthereinforcementshadshiftedthemomentumfirmlyinfavorofthedefenders.Witheachpassingmoment,theiradvancebecamemoredecisive,anditwasonlyamatteroftimebeforetheattackerswereroutedentirely.
TheAftermath
Whenthedustsettled,thevictoriousarmycounteditslosses.Theyhadfoughtbravely,butthebattlehadtakenitstoll.Still,theyhadprevailed,andtheytookprideintheirachievement.Thelosingcommander,meanwhile,heldhisheadinhishands.Hehadbeensoconfidentinhistactics,buttheyhadnotbeenenough.Itwasabitterpilltoswallow.
Andyet,bothsidesknewthatthiswasnottheend.Therewouldbemorebattles,moreconflicts,morestrugglesforpowerinthedaysandmonthsahead.Butfornow,inthismoment,theycouldsavorthesweettasteofvictoryorlamentthebittertasteofdefeat.Soonitwouldbetimetoplanforthenextbattleandbeginthewholecycleanew.
Suchisthewayofwar,andsuchisthewayoflife.Aslongastherearehumans,therewillbeconflict.Butaslongastherearethosewhofightforwhattheybelievein,therewillalsobehopeforabetterfuture.
